A view towards Cambridge

Wandlebury

Wandlebury was once the haunt of a ghostly knight who could be challenged at the dead of night by reciting the following words: “Knight, tonight come forth!”. Gervaise of Tilbury (ca. 1150- ca. 1228) was a thirteenth century canon, lawyer, statesman and writer, born in West Tilbury in Essex. He wrote that Robert, son of Hugh, overcame a ghostly giant here. Indeed, there are a number of giant figures cut into the chalk hills in the area.
